Rich heritage
Saint Kitts has a rich and diverse colonial history, marked by both French and British influence.
Brimstone Hill Fortress, located in the northwest of the island, is one of the best-preserved colonial fortresses in the Caribbean and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built by the British in the 17th century, this fortress offers panoramic views of the nearby coastline and reflects the various aspects of Saint Kitts' colonial and military history. At the heart of the fortress stands Fort George, one of the earliest polygonal defensive systems. Perched at 804 feet (245 meters) above sea level, you can see the islands of Sint Eustatius and Saba to the northwest, as well as the islands of Saint Martin and Saint Barthélemy to the north on a clear day.
The island's capital, Basseterre, is a charming blend of colonial architecture, local markets, and picturesque gardens. « Independence Square », with its historic buildings and central fountain, is a great place to stroll and experience local life.
A visit to former sugar plantations, such as « Wingfield Estate » on the west coast, offers insight into the historical importance of sugarcane to the economy of Saint Kitts.
Where to eat ?
Cuisine in Saint Kitts is a fusion of Creole, Caribbean, and European flavors. Fresh seafood such as lobster, grilled fish, and fritters is at the heart of local cuisine. In seaside restaurants, you can enjoy Caribbean specialties such as « pelau », a rice dish with chicken and vegetables, or spicy curries.
How to get there ?
Saint Kitts is easily accessible from the United States, Canada, and Europe via Robert L. Bradshaw International Airport, located north of Basseterre. The island also offers regular ferry services to Nevis island, its close sister island to the southeast, for those who wish to discover two islands in a single trip.
