The blonde skate can reach about 3.9 feet in length and weigh up to around 22 pounds.
Geographic range
The blonde skate is found in the eastern Atlantic ocean, from the coasts of Norway to Morocco. It is also present in parts of the western Mediterranean sea, particularly off Spain, Algeria, and Italy. The species is relatively common in British and Irish waters, but more localized in the Mediterranean.
Habitat
A benthic species, the blonde skate lives in close contact with the seabed. It mainly inhabits sandy or sandy-gravel continental shelf bottoms, where its coloration allows it to blend into its surroundings. It is generally found in shallow waters down to about 492 feet, although some individuals have been recorded at greater depths. Juveniles often use shallow coastal areas as natural nursery grounds.
Diet
The blonde skate is an opportunistic predator that hunts mainly near the seabed. It feeds on small fish, crustaceans, marine worms, mollusks, and cephalopods such as cuttlefish. As it grows, it consumes larger prey, with fish becoming a more important part of its diet.
Reproduction
The blonde skate is an oviparous species. Females lay eggs enclosed in capsules, often called mermaid’s purses, which they deposit on the seabed. The breeding season varies by region, but several dozen eggs may be produced each year. The young hatch after several months of development and measure about 6.3 to 7.1 inches at birth.
