The Greater Antilles, located in the Caribbean sea, form an archipelago made up of the four largest islands in the region: Cuba, Hispaniola, Jamaica and Puerto Rico. These islands stand out for their size, cultural diversity and histories shaped by colonization and African, European and Indigenous influences. Cuba, the largest of the archipelago, is famous for its colonial heritage, white-sand beaches and vibrant culture, especially reflected in its salsa music and the iconic Malecón in Havana. Its political history also makes it a point of interest for those passionate about modern history.
Hispaniola, shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti, is a land of contrasts where paradise beaches, rugged mountains and vibrant cities come together. The Dominican Republic is well known for its resort destinations like Punta Cana and its historic capital, Santo Domingo, the oldest European city in the New World. Haiti, despite its economic challenges, boasts a rich cultural heritage, with unique art, captivating music and historical landmarks like the Citadelle Laferrière, a powerful symbol of Haitian resistance. Together, these two nations share an island full of stunning landscapes and deeply rooted traditions.
Jamaica and Puerto Rico, though smaller in size, have had a major global cultural impact. Jamaica is the birthplace of reggae, made famous by Bob Marley and draws visitors with its idyllic beaches, lush green mountains and laid-back lifestyle. It's also known for spectacular waterfalls like Dunn's River Falls and the warm hospitality of its people. Puerto Rico, a U.S. territory, offers a unique blend of Spanish and American influences. Its capital, San Juan, is famous for its colorful colonial architecture, while the island is also a natural paradise with tropical forests like El Yunque. These islands of the Greater Antilles, rich in history, music and breathtaking landscapes, are true gems of the Caribbean sea.
