Scientifically, the remarkable beauty of its fluorescent blue color is reflected in the term callyspongia, which literally means « beautiful sponge » in Greek. The second part of its name describes the sponge's surface, which has folds giving it a honeycomb appearance, plicifera comes from Latin and means "bearing folds".
This sponge typically measures about 20 inches in height with a diameter of 4 inches.
Geographic range
The azure vase sponge is found in the Caribbean sea, in the Antilles, the Bahamas and south of Florida. It is found at depths ranging from a few feet to 82 feet.
Habitat
The azure vase sponge is a solitary sponge.
Diet
Like most sponges, the azure vase sponge feeds by filtering microscopic nutrients suspended in the water.
Reproduction
The azure vase sponge reproduces by the fertilization of eggs contained within the sponge by sperm released into the water by other sponges. Once fertilization occurs, the larva is released into the seawater and drifts with the currents. Upon reaching a suitable substrate, it attaches and develops into a new sponge.
